New Year’s Eve Tiramisu

Celebrate the New Year Italian-style with this classic tiramisu. Its creamy, coffee-laced layers are a timeless treat.

Ingredients

For the Coffee Mixture:

  • 2 cups strong brewed espresso or coffee, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (like Kahlúa)
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum (optional)

For the Filling:

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 16 ounces mascarpone cheese, at room temperature
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 24-30 Italian ladyfingers (Savoiardi)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Dark chocolate shavings for garnish
  • Gold sprinkles or edible gold leaf for New Year’s decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, combine the espresso, coffee liqueur, and rum (if using). Set aside.
  2. Create a double boiler by placing a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water (ensure the bottom doesn’t touch the water).
  3. In the bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar. Continue whisking over the simmering water for about 10 minutes, until the mixture is pale yellow and doubled in volume. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. In a large bowl, beat the mascarpone cheese until smooth.
  5. Fold the cooled egg yolk mixture into the mascarpone until well combined.
  6. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  7. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture in three additions, maintaining as much air as possible.
  8. Assembly:
    • Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture (about 1 second per side)
    • Line the bottom of a 9×13 inch dish with the soaked ladyfingers
    • Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers
    • Dust lightly with cocoa powder
    • Repeat layers with remaining ladyfingers and mascarpone mixture
  9. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  10. Before serving, dust the top generously with remaining cocoa powder.
  11. Decorate with chocolate shavings and gold decorations for a festive New Year’s touch.
